What your invoice should include
- Your business name, contact details and, if VAT-registered, your VAT number
- Your customer’s name and the job address
- A quote or invoice number and the date
- Each item of labour and materials, with quantity and price
- The total due, the payment due date and how to pay
Tips for consultant and freelancer invoices
- Bill monthly for ongoing work, with the hours on one line and a short note of what was done.
- For retainers, invoice at the start of each month.
- Large companies often need a purchase order number. Ask for it and put it on the invoice.
