What your invoice should include
- Your business name, contact details and, if VAT-registered, your VAT number
- Your customer’s name and the job address
- A quote or invoice number and the date
- Each item of labour and materials, with quantity and price
- The total due, the payment due date and how to pay
Tips for builder invoices
- Invoice in stages (deposit, progress, completion) and say which stage each invoice is for.
- Show the deposit already received as a negative line so the balance due is obvious.
- Attach or reference the accepted quote so any extras are clearly additions.
Questions
How much deposit should a builder ask for?
Many builders ask for 30 to 50% before starting, mainly to cover materials. Whatever you choose, put it in the quote and show it on every later invoice.
How do I invoice for extra work?
Quote the extra work separately and get it accepted, then add it as its own line on the next progress invoice.
Is this template free?
